How Is Magnet Wire Measured?

The specifications of magnet wire are expressed according to the diameter of bare wire (copper or aluminum). The measurement of magnet wire specifications is actually the measurement of the diameter of bare wire(unit is mm). Generally used for micrometer measurement, the accuracy of micrometer can reach 0.01mm.
The measurement of magnet wire specifications (wire diameter) includes direct measurement method and indirect measurement method.

Direct measurement method
The direct measurement method is to directly measure the diameter of the bare wire. The paint of the magnet wire needs to be burned off first, and the fire method is used. The wire diameter of the magnet wire used in the rotor of the series motor for power tools is very small. When burning it with fire, it must be burned several times for a short period of time, otherwise it may burn out and affect the efficiency. After burning, wipe the burnt paint with a cloth, and then use a micrometer to measure the diameter of the bare wire. The diameter of the bare wire is the specification of the magnet wire.
You can use an alcohol lamp or a candle to burn the patent leather of magnet wire.

Indirect measurement method
The indirect measurement method is to measure the outer diameter of the magnet wire (including patent leather), and then use the data of the outer diameter of the magnet wire (including patent leather). This method does not require the use of fire to burn the patent leather of the magnet wire, and is highly efficient. If you can know the specific model of the magnet wire, it will be more accurate to check the specifications (wire diameter) of the magnet wire.

No matter which method is used, measure different numbers or parts three times to ensure accurate measurement. When there is a large difference in the three measurement data, it is possible that the wires are wound in parallel, and careful analysis is required.
No matter which method is used, the wire must be straightened before measurement to ensure accurate measurement. When the difference between the three measurement data is large, it may also be caused by the time line not being straightened.
The direct measurement method is generally used to measure old wires (removed from burnt windings), while the indirect measurement method is generally used to measure newly wound wires, which is more convenient and faster.
